AMG® History

Roughly six decades ago, AMG® started a race with no finish line in sight. Flash back to 1967 in an old German mill in Burgstall, where two engineers with a passion for motorsports shared a vision. On every wide-open road, they saw an opportunity, and around every curve, an open invitation. Together, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher breathed AMG® into existence with performance innovations derived directly from motorsports. Today, the Mercedes-AMG® line pairs luxury with racing pedigree that excites East Bay drivers from Orinda to Danville.

AMG®: The Meaning Behind the 3 Letters

A for Aufrecht

Part of the initial two-man operation, AMG® co-founder Hans Werner Aufrecht was an engineering, design, and testing specialist in the development of racing engines. Under his watch, AMG® became a global brand in a blink.

M for Melcher

AMG® co-founder Erhard Melcher was the brains behind the V8 powerplant inside "The Hammer." In 1984, Melcher developed a completely independent cylinder head with four valves per cylinder.

G for Großaspach

Original engine tuning took place at Aufrecht's house in Großaspach. The brilliant minds spent their spare time honing the performance of the engine in Grossaspach, the AMG® point of origin.

AMG® Timeline - From 1965 to Present Day

  • 1960s: Within the Daimler-Benz Development Department, Aufrecht and Melcher tune the 300 SE racing engine. Motorsports activities are discontinued, but they press on outside of work.
  • 1965: Daimler colleague Manfred Schiek starts in the German Touring Car Championship with the 300 SE engine developed by Aufrecht and Melcher. Winning ten times, Schiek's triumph paints Aufrecht and Melcher as experts for sustaining and optimizing performance in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
  • 1967: The Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach engineering firm is established in a former mill in Burgstall. The AMG® headquarters allows the company to flourish in the design and testing of racing engine development.
  • 1971: Serving as the springboard for an enviable record on the track, an AMG® model seizes a surprise class victory in the 24-hour race at Spa in Belgium. Claiming second place overall and winning its class, the AMG® Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 paves the way for decades of racing success. The first AMG® racing milestone has the three letters spreading like wildfire, and years of growth follow.
  • 1970s and 80s: Private racing teams and clients from across the world seek out the revamped engines developed by AMG®. Several high-performance models for Mercedes-Benz sedans and coupes are developed by AMG®.
  • 1986: The Hammer receives worldwide fame from Melcher developing a V8 engine two years prior and implanting it in an E-Class coupe.
  • 1990: Now a well-known entity, the AMG® trademark is established, marking another milestone for the brand. AMG® products can now be sold at Mercedes-Benz dealerships.
  • 1995: AMG® comes to the U.S.
  • 2000s: Another decade of AMG® racing success on the track ensues, with multiple DTM German Touring Car) Championships.
  • 2005: A takeover by DaimlerChrysler AG allows the newly founded Mercedes-AMG® GmbH to benefit from global standing and vast resources.
  • Today: Mercedes-AMG® GmbH has a workforce of more than 2,000 at its Affalterbach plant. A "one man, one engine" philosophy is followed, as the assembly of each AMG® high-performance engine is handled by a single technician.
